Project Tarunai

Tarunai  is a connotation for adolescence and Youth. As we know with nearly half of the population in country as adolescent and young with basic challenges related to education, livelihood and health don’t bloom to their full potential. Many of these children ( who if go to school? ) go to Government schools where the environment and services at times are not very fertile to positive growth and Development of Young mind.

With this fact in mind, AROGYAM has decided to work with students from Government schools in Patna on experimental basis for next three years. Based on the experiences, it will extend this to other government schools in various districts of Bihar and Jharkhand through its NGO partners. Under this experimental project, ten Government schools ( five boys and five girls school) are identified and a formal permission has been taken from the authorities to conduct the program. An orientation of the teachers at particular school is organized prior to launching the program at school.

The students from class VI to XII are provided with various inputs on growing up processes, peer pressure, career, communication etc. and a pool of 20-25 students from various classes are selected and offered a three day intense training on growing up process, societal norms, gender and sexuality, communication, reproductive health and importance of helping other peers to grow as positive and successful human being.

These trained students work as peer educators of AROGYAM in that particular school helping other students. They help the counselors and other team members of AROGYAM identify the students in need of educational assistance, health services, psychological support and any other possible support that AROGYAM can mobilize for their continued education and empowerment to develop as positively contributing citizen.

At the end of the academic year all the peer educators honored at public function and two peer educators from each school are given best peer educator award. One teacher from each school gets the best teacher award who has been very helpful to students and voted for by the students.

At the end of three years, AROGYAM hopes to set a process at these schools where teacher, students, parents and other stakeholders in young people’s growth and development get proactive and create an environment for career growth which is healthy and positive.
